Who has been the best midfielder in the Premier League this season?
Douglas Luiz
The Brazilian has been outstanding for Aston Villa and he’s played a major role for the Midlands side, who are on the verge of qualifying for the Champions League. Despite playing in a deeper midfield role, Luiz has provided 14 goal contributions in 34 games and his performances have attracted serious interest from Arsenal.
Alexis Mac Allister
The Argentina international has settled brilliantly at Liverpool and he’s been one of their best players. Mac Allister has only missed five league games and he will be a major part of Liverpool when Arne Slot replaces Jürgen Klopp this summer. Mac Allister has been the engine in Liverpool’s midfield and he represents a relative bargain at €42 million.
Martin Ødegaard
Ødegaard has revelled since being handed the captaincy at Arsenal and he’s delivered on his enormous potential that saw Real Madrid sign him at 16. Ødegaard has provided 16 goal contributions in 34 league games and he’s been integral to Arsenal’s title challenge. Few players in the league possess the technical and creative ability of Ødegaard and he’s growing in influence every season.
Cole Palmer
Few would argue that Palmer has been the signing of the season. The 22-year-old has 31 goal involvements for Chelsea in the league with only Ollie Watkins surpassing that record. Palmer’s attacking output has been incredible and he’s been involved in 19 league goals in 2024 - five more than second placed Kai Havertz.
Declan Rice
The third summer signing amongst the nominees, Rice has justified Arsenal splashing out a club record fee of €116.6m to sign him from West Ham. The 25-year-old has featured in every Premier League game for the Gunners and he’s provided solidity in midfield while contributing in attack. Rice has posted impressive attacking numbers with seven goals and nine assists in the league with Arteta allowing the midfielder more licence to get forward in a more advanced role than he played at West Ham.
Rodri
Rodri has finally received the plaudits that he deserves this season for his immense contributions to Manchester City. The Spaniard is Pep Guardiola’s most trusted lieutenant and he’s so influential for the champions-elect. City have remarkably failed to lose in the last 72 games in which Rodri has featured and he’s comfortably one of the best midfielders in the world.
